Competency Assessment
Recognition of Current Competencies
Recognition of Prior Learning
Reforms in Australia's training system have recognised that many workers have acquired a range of skills on the job which are equal to skills gained in formal training. Industry has driven this move to greater recognition of skills gained through practical experience in the workplace.
The process of recognising these skills is called by various names - skills recognition, competency assessment, workplace assessment, recognition of current competencies, recognition of prior learning.
The advantages of these skills recognition processes are
- For the worker
- prior work, training, and life experiences are recognised
- formal qualification are gained
- recognition by employers and fellow workers
- better career path
- greater motivation
- For the organisation
- skills recognition aligns with and supports organisational goals and objectives
- skills gaps are identified
- appropriate learning and training is identified
- worker competency linked with organisational objectives
- worker motivation
- develops team aspects through recognition process
How Does It Work?
Skills recognition may be initiated by the individual or by the organisation.
Where an organisation is involved NMIT's staff will sit down with you and work through the process, typically involving
- clarifying what skills recognition is all about
- planning the process with the organisation - within the framework of your goals, needs and values
- identify job profiles/descriptions, career paths, organisational training needs
- work with appropriate industry people to develop the recognition framework in conjunction with job requirements and qualification requirements
- work with workers to help them identify their previous experience and training which will lead to skills recognition
- work through the process to identify skills to be recognised by qualifications along with any additional training needs.
For individuals the process is one to one and we guide you through the process of identifying your skills and experience for qualification purposes.
Nationally Recognised
Skills recognition is a nationally recognised process, initiated by industry and driven through the Australian National Training Authority.
Qualifications awarded are nationally recognised and are the same qualifications as are awarded by training programs.
Assessors must have appropriate training qualifications and be competent in the industry standards to at least the level being assessed, or work in conjunction with a person who has achieved the relevant standards.
