Course Description

The Bachelor of Illustration explores illustration practices and the influence of commercial, social, cultural and technological advances on the illustration industry.

Commercial technology is creating and recreating new contexts for illustration and illustrators. Evolving and emerging illustrative practices in social commentary (satire), graphic design, publishing, advertising, animation (computer and film) and multimedia creates enormous potential for illustrators.

The 21st century illustrator will be entrepreneurial, culturally and creatively aware, have strong management skills and business acumen, be able to predict and interpret trends and operate within changing environments. Consequently the body of knowledge that informs the development and delivery of the Bachelor of Illustration also draws on scholarship in history, technology, commerce, media and cultural studies.

Specialist Facilities

  • A computer design laboratory with state of the art Macintosh workstations.
  • Audio Visual/Design studio
  • Animation/Film room
  • An illustration/design studio that includes individual design workstations, copier, spray booth and the facility for individual laptop plugins.
  • A specialist drawing studio
  • Photography and Printmaking facilities available
  • A visual arts gallery on campus (B Space Gallery) plus access to the program of exhibitions at Preston (A Space Gallery). Both art galleries are designed for the
    exhibition of artwork to an audience.

Teaching Staff

The Bachelor of Illustration is taught by qualified academic staff supported by highly experienced industry practitioners.

The Learning Environment

  • A supportive learning environment with small classes and supervised hands-on experience.
  • Practical involvement with industry through NMIT’s illustration facilities and through industry experience.
  • A combination of theory and its application in industry-scale facilities supported by academic staff and industry practitioners.

Prerequisite: Units 3 and 4 English and visual communication & design (or equivalent)

International English Language Testing System ( IELTS ) 6.0

Course Fee

AUD$12,000 per year

No amenities fees are charged for any higher education courses.
