Course Description

Civil engineering involves improving our environment and living standards with the design and construction of large works such as roads, bridges, commercial and industrial buildings, water supply, irrigation, water and sewage treatment schemes, and small works such as recreational facilities, car parks etc.
In the first year of studies, students study basic mathematics and communication skills, drafting and surveying. In the second year, students study advanced drafting techniques as well as road, drainage and structural design.

Career Opportunities

Engineering associates assist in the design, drawing and construction of civil engineering works. For example, a proposed new road may require a feature plan compiled from field observations and aerial photographs. Computers may be used to assist in calculations and producing accurate drawings for construction. Foundation types would have to be determined for the site. Cost estimates would have to be prepared and tests on engineering materials be performed.

Successful students may expect to work for government departments and public authorities, civil engineering contractors or consulting engineers.

Course Duration
