Collection of Personal Information

Personal information, i.e. any information from which an individual's identity is apparent and can be reasonably ascertained, is not registered or recorded when this site is viewed. Personal information is only collected via this website if the viewer provides such information using online forms to submit an enquiry or enter their email address to be part of the short courses email list.

When a user looks at the NMIT website, WebCentral (which is an Australian web hosting provider) records the individual’s visit and logs (in server logs) the following information for statistical purposes:

  • User's IP address.
  • Times and dates of site visits.
  • Pages accessed (including most visited and least visited) and files downloaded.
  • Browsers and operating systems used by visitors.
  • The country from which the individual is browsing the NMIT website.
  • The time spent per visit.

When a user looks at the NMIT Library website, NMIT logs (in server logs) the following information for statistical purposes:

  • User's IP address.
  • Times and dates of site visits.
  • Pages accessed and files downloaded.

An individual’s browsing activities are not identified and are used solely for monthly aggregated statistical purposes in order to analyse key NMIT website trends.

Cookies

NMIT uses session cookies during an individual's intent to submit an enquiry via a web form. The session cookie is used for the specific purpose of processing the form and automatically expires once the web form is submitted by the individual. A limited number of vendor based internet products use automated cookie generation. These are only used when authenticated SSL security is in place. The primary use of these is for active session tracking. All SSL sessions have timeout parameters which in turn expire the cookies. When a user closes their browser, any active session cookies set by the NMIT website is automatically terminated and no personal information is stored which might identify the user should the user visit the NMIT website at a later date.

No web beacons are used on the NMIT website.

Use, Disclosure and Transborder Data Flows

NMIT staff only use the personal information collected via the NMIT website for the purpose for which it was given.

NMIT staff do not provide personal information about individuals, collected via the NMIT website, to third parties such as government agencies, organisations, or companies (whether it be inside or outside Victoria) unless one of the following applies:

  • The individual has given consent.
  • The individual would reasonably expect, or has been informed, that the information is usually given to those individuals, bodies or agencies.
  • It is required or authorised by law.
  • It will prevent or lessen a serious and imminent threat to somebody’s life or health.

When an individual’s email address is received by an NMIT staff because the individual sent it via the NMIT website, the email will only be used or disclosed for the intent for which the individual has provided it. The email will not be added to a mailing list or used for any other purposes without the individual’s consent.

Data Quality

In instances where an individual has consented in providing their details to maintain communication, we update their details when the individual has advised NMIT that their details have changed.

Data Security

Secure Utilities for the Transmission of Personal Information

There are two session types that are used on the NMIT website:
1. Authenticated SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) (128 bit encryption): This is used when accessing internal web based facilities from an external location, eg mail, file access, intranets, etc. All externally available internal services use an SSL based appliance server to proxy these services to the end user who is required to authenticate before accessing their files and internal information.

There are two levels of access:
1.1 Staff can access a number of services including email, file access, and the intranet.
1.2 Students can access the student intranet only using a generic login. Students can check their unofficial academic results and personal details on SSL encrypted web pages. The personal information is stored internally at NMIT and can only be accessed via password protected logins which are unique to each individual. Only NMIT staff with the proper authorisation have access to the internally stored information.

2. No secure transmission over the internet: The student results system requires a student ID and a date of birth to allow a student to access their results. An individual can choose not to use this system if the individual is concerned about the inherent risks involved in sending data over the internet. Students may contact the department, information centre or teacher for the same information.

Access to and Correction of Personal Information

Students: Please view the Student Privacy Statement. To confirm your details that were collected at enrolment, log in to your Unofficial Academic Results account. To update your personal details, please view “change personal details” once you are logged in to your Unofficial Academic Results account. Alternatively, you can confirm or update your personal details by visiting an NMIT Information Centre. Identification will be requested.

Staff and prospective staff: Please view the Privacy Statement - Prospective Employees & Employees. Please contact the Personnel department to update your personal details.

If you are not an NMIT employee, a prospective employee or a student and you know that NMIT has collected your personal information, please contact NMIT Information on 9269 1200 to put you through to the relevant department that can help you to gain access to and correct your personal information.

Unique Identifiers

An individual who submits their details via the NMIT website are not assigned any unique identifiers.

Anonymity

Individuals may choose not to fill in a web form and are provided with alternative contact means. If an individual chooses to submit an enquiry via a web form, the individual is only required to enter in an email and a name (whether it be an alias, pseudonym, or a real name). These details are necessary in order to perform the function of providing information to the individual.

Sensitive Information

Sensitive information is NOT collected via the NMIT website.

Short Courses Email List

Individuals submit their email to the list via an NMIT web form. The NMIT web office maintains a short courses email list for the purpose of providing short courses information to email addresses on the list. Personal information is NOT collected or stored in the short courses email list. Only the relevant staff members have access to the password protected list which is NOT stored on the NMIT website or any public storage area. An email request or notification from the user to a staff at NMIT's web office will activate the removal of their email from the NMIT short courses email list.

Internet User Risks

Website users should note that there are inherent risks involved in transmitting information over the internet.

Any information submitted via any of NMIT's online forms is not transmitted over the internet via a secure connection. The information may be viewed by a third party while it is being transmitted. NMIT is not responsible for any consequential loss, abuse, misuse or any other matters arising from information being sent over the internet.

NMIT does not guarantee that utilities contained in the NMIT website will be uninterrupted or without inaccuracies. Please view website disclaimer. NMIT shall not be responsible for the proliferation of computer viruses (including worms) or other detrimental components transmitted from this website and other intermediary sites. Individuals may contact the NMIT Web Administrator by phone or email if they have concerns about making contact via the internet.

NMIT recommends that you update your browser as required by its producer. Also, ensure your computer is equipped with updated virus protection software.

Website Information Updates

Information that requires amendment can be brought to the attention of the NMIT Web Administrator who will initiate the procedure for the amendment if necessary.
