Students can apply to have previously passed subjects or previous experience taken into account with regards to the subjects within the course that they are enrolled in. They can apply for TRANSFERS and EXEMPTIONS.
- TRANSFER (T): the SAME or an EQUIVALENT (as stated in Curriculum documentation) module/competency has been successfully completed at NMIT or ANOTHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION - no fee applies.
- EXEMPTION (EX): granted where a student has been successful in applying for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in a module/competency. Full Fee student: an RPL administrative fee of $80 plus $1.34 per RPL hour applies. However the MAXIMUM 'per hour' fee for RPL or RPL plus tuition is $860 per year. Concession students: the only fee is an administrative fee of $40.
Fee for Service Students are charged a single fee determined by the department on a cost recovery basis
PLEASE NOTE: Where a student applies for EXEMPTIONS they will be charged fees as above whether or not the EXEMPTIONS are granted.
Failure to pay these fees will result in the student being prevented from enrolling further at NMIT, and prevented from receiving a Statement of Results.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process through which people can gain credit in recognised courses based on learning gained from experience in the workplace, in voluntary work, in social or domestic activities or through informal, or formal training. Learning in each case is measured against the module/competency for which RPL is sought.
- RPL can include situations where consideration is sought for skills gained at work or through life skills in general. This category of RPL requires the Assessor to interview the applicant. At this interview the documentation supplied by the applicant will be reviewed and the applicant will be required to substantiate their RPL request.
- RPL can also include situations where it can be shown that relevant learning outcomes have been achieved in modules/competencies with similar content from other courses. This category of RPL requires the Assessor to undertake and document a 'matching of learning outcomes' between the prior modules/competencies and those for which RPL is sought.
In both situations the successful applicant will receive an EXEMPTION (EX) for the module/competency.
Talk to your department co-ordinator if you are unsure whether to proceed with the Skills Recognition process.
Whether students enrol and then apply or apply as they enrol, the fees paid will be the same. However, students who enrol in subjects and then successfully apply for Transfers in these subjects should apply for a refund.
