If you have a Grievance
In the first instance:
Talk to the person involved - In most cases, grievances can be resolved at this informal level
If you are unable to discuss the issue with the person involved or this does not resolve the issue, you should discuss the situation with a teacher or counsellor.
Formal written complaints can be lodged with the Head of Department / Snr Lecturer / Manager
Supports Available
Teaching staff can provide information about the Student Grievance Policy and Procedure
Counsellors can offer confidential emotional support to students involved in a grievance process.
You can have the support of a third party (friend / advocate) accompany you to any grievance meetings.
Confidentiality
All parties are entitled to confidentiality in a grievance process.
It is important that you do not name the person you have a grievance against publicly.

Complaints and Grievances
NMIT is committed to promoting and maintaining an environment where a student who experiences conflict can raise their concerns and have them addressed in a responsible and respectful manner.
This brochure is designed to explain the process for resolving complaints and grievances in a timely and fair manner.
Complaints
A complaint is when a student is dissatisfied with an existing institute procedure which effects the quality of services offered to the student. An example could be that of a student complaining about the choice of vending machines available on campus.
If you have a complaint, you are encouraged to complete an “Improvements Suggestion’ (IS) form. Forms are available from:
- Student Services Offices
- Information Desks
- Head of Departments.
Grievances
A grievance is a serious problem of an academic / non-academic nature that a student believes seriously disadvantages them in the course of their study at NMIT.
